Your students will explore the Mexican-American War in a reading and discussion activity. Students will begin the activity by discussing the concept of a fair war with an anticipation guide associated with causes of the Mexican-American War. They will then work with a partner to read about the Mexican-American War and answer discussion questions. Students will take notes by annotating a map of the Mexican – American War. You can conclude the activity with different writing prompts or with a 3 Point Review game.

This resource has modifications for ELL students by providing Word Wall termssimplified readings and adding sentence stems to the graphic organizers. The Talk Read, Talk Write instructional model has also been added to this lesson.

(B)  analyze information by sequencing, categorizing, identifying cause-and-effect relationships, comparing, contrasting, finding the main idea, summarizing, making generalizations and predictions, and drawing inferences and conclusions;
(C)  organize and interpret information from outlines, reports, databases, and visuals, including graphs, charts, timelines, and maps;

(3) History. The student understands the importance of the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas, and the annexation of Texas to the United States. The student is expected to:
(E) explain the events that led to the annexation of Texas to the United States, including the impact of the U.S.-Mexican War.
