Your students aren’t just doodling. They’re learni Your students aren’t just doodling. They’re learning!

Doodle Notes™ are built on the science of dual coding: when students process information visually and verbally at the same time, they retain more, connect more, and engage more deeply.
Instead of passively copying notes, they’re:
☑️ Interacting with content visually
☑️ Making meaningful connections
☑️ Organizing ideas in a way that actually sticks
☑️ Showing up more actively in discussion

Doodle Notes™ are woven into many of my Social Studies resources. Explore them at socialstudiessuccess.com/shop!

Have you tried hexagonal thinking yet? Students Have you tried hexagonal thinking yet?

Students arrange labeled hexagons to show relationships between people, places, events, and key vocabulary.

Connections are made wherever two sides touch, and every side can connect to something new.

Instead of surface-level review, students have to explain why two concepts are related.

A few ways to use it:
✅ Classic review game (award points for each connection made)
✅ Post-reading processing activity
✅ Layered lesson, adding new hexagon sets as you move through a unit, printed on different colors to show change over time

The best part? Walking around and listening to the conversations students have as they build their arrangements. This helps a deeper understanding click!

Today we remember Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when Today we remember Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas finally received word of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As a social studies teacher, I believe we study history not to dwell in the past, but to understand how we got here — and to do better.

Juneteenth reminds us that progress is possible, and that the work is never finished.
