One of my favorite ways to introduce a new era or One of my favorite ways to introduce a new era or region is an artifact box.

Collect tangible objects related to the content from garage sales, dollar stores, or Goodwill and let students explore them before the unit even begins.

Then walk through a series of spiral questions: What do you see? What do you think each artifact represents? Can you categorize them? Is there a cause and effect relationship between any of them? What would you title the box?

It gets students thinking historically before they’ve read a single word, and the questions build on each other in a way that naturally moves from observation to analysis.

The good news is I’ve already written spiral questions for you, and they’re free to download from my website! Comment ARTIFACT and I’ll send you the link.

Vocabulary instruction is essential for Social Stu Vocabulary instruction is essential for Social Studies.
A word wall isn’t decoration. It’s a reference you A word wall isn’t decoration. It’s a reference your students can use every day.

A few things that make them work:

🔷 Terms paired with color images. The image reinforces the definition.

🔷 Post it at the focal point of the room and interact with it. Point to terms, use them in instruction, and reference them during discussion. If you use it, students will too.

🔷 Pronounce the terms out loud before students encounter them in a reading.

🔷 Have students write their own definition or personal connection and post it next to the term.

The more students interact with vocabulary, the better their comprehension, and word walls make that happen!

Are you looking for a fun and interactive way to r Are you looking for a fun and interactive way to review geographic terms at the beginning of the year with your students?

Comment GEOTERMS for the link to my Geography Terms Review Activity!

Students are placed into groups of three and given a set of matching cards. They must work together to match the vocabulary term, picture, and definition of important geographic vocabulary terms. Once students have completed the matching cards, they move on to the Vocabulary Chart where they fill in the blanks with the correct definition for each term.

To make the lesson even more engaging, students are given different Geographic Application maps to identify and label geographic terms independently before sharing with their group. This lesson plan is a great way to review geography concepts with your students in a fun and interactive way.
