Description
Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most influential figures of the 20th century, shaping American politics, human rights, and social progress through her tireless advocacy and leadership. As First Lady from 1933 to 1945, she redefined the role by actively engaging in political and social issues, championing civil rights, women’s rights, and programs for the poor during the Great Depression and World War II. Beyond the White House, she played a crucial role in the founding of the United Nations and was instrumental in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, a document that remains a cornerstone of global human rights efforts. Her ability to connect with ordinary citizens, through her speeches, activism, and widely read newspaper column My Day, made her a voice for the marginalized. Roosevelt’s belief in equality, education, and civic responsibility continues to inspire leaders and activists today, solidifying her legacy as a trailblazer for justice and human dignity.
This is a guidebook designed to supplement reading about Eleanor Roosevelt. Choose the activity or activities you think will engage your students or enhance your instruction. Differentiate for your students by providing them specific activities or allow your students to choose their own assignment. The Character Quotes activity is designed to introduce your students to Eleanor Roosevelt prior to reading about her life. The other activities are all for after reading.
I have included a choice board if you would like for your students to complete more than one activity. It is divided into art, poetry, and writing activities. The teacher signature is for your initial after they have turned the assignment into you or after they choose to complete that assignment.
